A Dryer That Runs But Won’t Heat Is a Common — and Fixable — Problem
Your dryer tumbles, the timer counts down, but your clothes come out just as wet as they went in. This frustrating problem affects gas and electric dryers alike, and it’s one of the most frequent service calls our technicians handle across Ashburn, Herndon, Sterling, Leesburg, and Loudoun County.
5 Reasons Your Dryer Isn’t Heating
1. Blown Thermal Fuse
The thermal fuse is a one-time safety device that blows when the dryer overheats — usually due to a clogged vent. Once blown, it must be replaced (it cannot be reset). This is the single most common cause of a dryer that runs but produces no heat, and it’s an inexpensive repair. Important: always check and clean your vent duct when replacing the thermal fuse, or the new fuse will blow again quickly.
2. Clogged Dryer Vent
A clogged vent doesn’t just reduce heat — it’s a fire hazard. Lint buildup in the vent duct restricts airflow, causing the dryer to overheat and trip safety devices. If your dryer takes more than one cycle to dry a normal load, or if clothes feel unusually hot at the end of a cycle, clean your vent immediately. Many Northern Virginia homes have long duct runs that need annual professional cleaning.
3. Failed Heating Element (Electric Dryers)
Electric dryers use a coiled heating element that can burn out over time. A multimeter test will show no continuity if the element has failed. Heating element replacement is a mid-range repair and extends dryer life by 5–10 years.
4. Bad Igniter or Gas Valve (Gas Dryers)
In gas dryers, the igniter glows red-hot to light the gas burner. If the igniter fails or the gas valve solenoids don’t open, there’s no flame and no heat. You may hear clicking but see no glow through the dryer door. Gas component repairs should always be performed by a certified technician.
5. Faulty Cycling Thermostat
The cycling thermostat regulates the temperature inside the drum. A failed thermostat can prevent the heating element or burner from activating, or can cause it to cycle on and off erratically, leading to uneven or insufficient heat.
