How Appliance Repair Pricing Works
Almost every appliance repair invoice has the same three components: the diagnostic visit, the part, and the labor to install it. Companies differ mostly in how they present those three, not in what they are charging for.
The service call or diagnostic fee
This covers the technician coming out and identifying the fault. At Royal Appliance Repair the service call fee is waived entirely when you proceed with the repair, so if you go ahead you are paying for parts and labor only. If you decide not to repair, a nominal trip charge applies.
Parts
Part cost is the widest variable and it is driven almost entirely by brand. A control board for a mainstream Whirlpool or GE unit and the equivalent board for a Sub-Zero or Thermador are not in the same price category. See our brand reliability guide for which brands carry a parts premium.
Labor
Labor tracks how buried the failed component is. A dishwasher drain pump reached from the front is straightforward. A refrigerator evaporator fan behind the freezer liner, or a washer drum bearing that requires splitting the tub, is a different job entirely even though both are one part.
What Makes a Repair Cost More
- Luxury and built-in brands: Sub-Zero, Wolf, Viking, Thermador, Miele and Dacor carry higher part costs and often need proprietary diagnostic tools.
- Sealed system work: anything involving refrigerant requires EPA Section 608 certification and more time.
- Parts that are no longer stocked: discontinued models sometimes need sourced or substitute parts.
- Buried components: drum bearings, compressors and evaporator assemblies mean significant disassembly.
- Panel-ready and integrated units: the cabinet front has to come off before the appliance can be serviced.
How to Judge Whether a Quote Is Fair
Three things separate a fair quote from a bad one, and none of them are the dollar figure on its own.
- You get the quote in writing before any work starts, not after.
- The quote names the specific part and the specific fault, not just a category like electrical issue.
- The technician can explain what they tested to reach that conclusion.
If a technician quotes a repair without having tested anything, get a second opinion. Guessing at a control board is the most expensive mistake in this trade, because the board is usually the most expensive part and often is not what failed.
When Repair Stops Being Worth It
The common industry guideline is the 50 percent rule: if the repair costs more than half the price of replacing the unit, and the appliance is past the midpoint of its expected life, replacement usually makes more sense. We will tell you when a repair does not make financial sense. Walking away from a job we could have billed is better business than selling somebody a repair on an appliance that is already finished.
