Typical Lifespan by Appliance
| Appliance | Typical range | What usually ends it |
|---|---|---|
| Refrigerator | 10 to 15 years | Compressor or sealed system failure |
| Chest or upright freezer | 12 to 18 years | Compressor |
| Washer (top load) | 10 to 14 years | Transmission or drum bearing |
| Washer (front load) | 8 to 12 years | Drum bearing, often from overloading |
| Dryer | 10 to 14 years | Motor, or cumulative damage from restricted venting |
| Dishwasher | 8 to 12 years | Pump and motor assembly, or control board |
| Gas range | 13 to 17 years | Control board or burner assembly |
| Electric range | 11 to 15 years | Elements and control board |
| Over-range microwave | 6 to 10 years | Magnetron or door interlock switches |
| Garbage disposal | 8 to 15 years | Body corrosion and leaking |
These are ranges, not guarantees. The same model can reach the top or the bottom of its range depending almost entirely on installation and maintenance.
What Shortens Appliance Life in Northern Virginia
Hard water
Loudoun County has some of the hardest water in the state, and Prince William is moderately hard. Scale builds on dishwasher heating elements, inside washer dispensers and in refrigerator water lines and ice makers. If you are in Ashburn, Leesburg or Sterling, this is the single biggest factor working against your appliances.
Well water and iron
Fauquier County properties on private wells deal with high iron content, which stains laundry and corrodes washer inlet valves from the inside. See our Warrenton service area page for more on this.
Restricted dryer venting
The most preventable cause of premature failure we see. A restricted vent makes the dryer run longer and hotter, which stresses the heating element, the thermal fuse and the motor. It is also a fire risk.
Overloading
The leading cause of front-load washer drum bearing failure, which is frequently the repair that ends the machine.
Maintenance That Genuinely Extends Life
- Vacuum refrigerator condenser coils once a year. Details in the refrigerator guide.
- Have the dryer vent duct professionally cleaned every one to two years, more often on long runs.
- Clean the dishwasher filter monthly. Most homeowners do not know it exists. See the dishwasher guide.
- Leave a front-load washer door ajar between loads to prevent gasket mold.
- Limit oven self-clean cycles to once or twice a year.
- Run cold water when using the disposal, never hot.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do more expensive appliances last longer?
Commercial-grade and luxury built-ins like Sub-Zero, Wolf, Miele and Speed Queen generally do, because they are designed to be serviced rather than replaced. Mid-priced units from mainstream brands do not reliably outlast entry-level ones.
Does an extended warranty make sense?
That is a personal call. What we will say is that the failures most likely to occur inside a typical warranty window are usually the cheaper ones. The expensive failures tend to arrive after it expires.
How do I know how old my appliance is?
The serial number on the data plate encodes the manufacture date for most brands. A technician can read it, and we are happy to tell you during a service visit.
