Stop Overloading It
Overloading is the leading cause of premature drum bearing failure, and drum bearing replacement is frequently the repair that costs enough to end the machine. A full load is fine. A packed load, where clothes cannot tumble freely, puts the weight off-centre and hammers the bearing on every spin cycle.
If your washer walks across the floor during spin, that is not a levelling problem you can ignore. It is the load being out of balance, and every cycle like that shortens the bearing life.
Front-Load Gasket Mold
The rubber door boot traps water in its folds. Left closed, it grows mold, and the smell transfers to clothes. This is the most common front-load complaint we hear and it is entirely preventable.
- Wipe the gasket fold dry after the last load of the day.
- Leave the door ajar between loads.
- Pull out and rinse the detergent dispenser monthly.
- Run a hot cycle with a washer cleaner monthly.
Hard Water and Detergent
Loudoun County water is hard, and Prince William is moderately hard. Scale collects in the drum seal and dispenser, and excess detergent makes it worse rather than better. Use the amount specified for your water hardness, and use HE detergent in an HE machine. Oversudsing causes drainage faults that look like a failed pump.
On well water in Fauquier County the issue is iron rather than hardness. It stains laundry and corrodes the inlet valve. See the Warrenton area page for local detail.
Warning Signs Worth a Call
- Grinding or rumbling that gets louder during spin, which usually means the bearing.
- Water left in the drum at the end of a cycle.
- The machine filling slowly or stopping mid-cycle waiting for water.
- Burning smell during operation.
- Leaks from the front lower corner, often a door seal or a tub-to-pump hose.
Our washer repair technicians carry the common drain pumps, inlet valves and door seals on the truck for first-visit fixes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my washer smell?
Almost always mold in the door gasket fold or the detergent dispenser on a front-load machine. Wiping the gasket dry and leaving the door ajar solves most cases.
Is a drum bearing repair worth it?
On a machine under about seven years old it often is. Past ten years it usually approaches the cost of replacement, because the tub has to be split to reach it.
How much detergent should I use?
Less than most people use. Follow the HE detergent dosing for your water hardness. Excess suds cause drain faults that look like pump failure.
