Use Self-Clean Sparingly
Self-clean runs the oven far hotter than normal cooking, and that heat is hard on the door latch, the thermal fuse and the control board. A large share of oven service calls arrive within days of a self-clean cycle.
Once or twice a year is reasonable. More than that and you are trading cleaning convenience against the life of the control board. Wiping spills as they happen, with the oven cool, avoids most of the need.
If you do run self-clean, do it when you have time to spare afterwards. A thermal fuse that blows during the cycle leaves the oven dead, and it is not a repair you want to discover the day before a holiday.
Gas Burner and Igniter Problems
A burner that clicks but will not light is usually a dirty or wet igniter, or a clogged burner port. Clean the burner cap and port with a pin, dry everything thoroughly and try again.
An oven that takes a long time to preheat, or never reaches temperature, often has a weakening bake igniter. The igniter has to draw enough current to open the gas valve, and as it ages it glows but no longer opens the valve reliably.
On propane rather than natural gas, a range converted without the correct orifice kit will burn yellow and soot up. That matters in rural Fauquier County. See the Warrenton area page.
Temperature Drift
Ovens drift over time. If baking results have changed gradually rather than suddenly, put an oven thermometer on the centre rack and compare it to the set point. Most ovens have a calibration offset you can adjust yourself, and the procedure is in the manual.
If it is off by more than about 35 degrees, or the drift is uneven front to back, that is usually a sensor or element issue rather than calibration.
Glass Cooktops
- Never slide cast iron across the surface. Lift it.
- Clean spills once cool with a cooktop cream, not an abrasive pad.
- Sugar spills should be removed while still warm. Sugar bonds to the glass as it cools and can pit the surface.
- A cracked surface is replaced rather than repaired, and on entry-level ranges the part is a large fraction of a new range.
